Below is a list of the top 10 text editors for writers that let you just write without all the distractions that come with the full-featured word processing application. Some of these are simple text editors with some other features, while others come with lots of extra features that you can use or ignore. They all offer full-screen options in which you type text without distracting text size, color enhancements, and graphics.
Q10 (Windows, Free)
Q10 is only available for Windows, not any other OS. Once you've downloaded, you begin typing in full screen. Other items on the screen besides the text are page numbers, words, and characters on the bottom left.
Nothing annoys you when doing it with the Q10, other than the actual typewriter sound shutting down if needed. The screen above is what you get, and there is also a version that includes a spell checker. You will be selected from the English version as the default or any of the nine alternative languages detailed in the Q10 homepage.
The settings that allow you to choose from a range of fonts, font size, set text and paragraph size, and text color. There are also fast and accurate automatic text installation programs available. You can also set the time for writing articles.
FocusWriter (Windows / Mac / Linux, free)
FocusWriter is another full-screen text editor that offers several attractive customizable themes. The screenshot below shows the portion of the screen using the Writing Desk topic:
The menu is displayed by placing the cursor on the top, bottom and sides of the screen. The top main menu is shown above, along with several features available in the Format dropdown menu. FocusWriter offers more text formats than Q10 and other menu items including find and replace, timers, spell check, smart quotes, daily progress and a variety of symbols including Cyrillic, Hy Greek, Arabic and a variety of monetary and mathematical symbols.
The range of options is larger than expected with the basic text editor, and you need to use the cursor to access the menu, scrollbar, and bottom target inspector. Like the Q10, it is portable and remembers what you last worked. It has also been translated into more than 20 languages.

Provided by HamsterCoders, Write is a simple and hassle-free text editor.

There are also links available for several reference websites, including Wikipedia, Google and thesaurus. You will also add hyperlinks to the text. Another useful feature is that this text editor automatically saves the writing process so you cannot lose what you have written.
In short, Write is a great text editor with many useful features. It is a great text editor.
OmmWriter (Mac, Basic: Free, Premium: Donationware)
Known as OmmWriter Dana, this is a distracting free text editor for Mac users. It focuses on relaxation, with sound, customizable wallpapers. The example below from the OmmWriter website is using chromatherapy background.
You change the setting from a simple menu to the side that pops up when you move the mouse there. The default is light gray with leafless trees in the corner. OmmWriter also comes with a selection of sound effects designed to boost focus. Some people think this is distraction, while others like it.
You will also choose from a range of fonts, each selected for a sense of relaxation and tranquility. The upgrades include the paid version and the 'give-what you want' version, each offering a wide selection of audio and visual themes.
You cannot print using Ommwriter, but you can save files in omm., Txt. and pdf. format to read or copy to another editor for printing. Omm is the same format as txt. The lack of printing is probably the weakness in this system. On the other hand, it sounds great, and is a real text editor without the few improvements of those discussed above. However, it includes functions available through keyboard shortcuts and hovering over the writing area.

Draft (Browser Based)
The icon on the left allows you to change settings such as text, background color, and even tasks such as naming, viewing, and importing documents. The icon on the right provides shortcuts for the most common markup format.
You can also use the Hemingway mode. This prevents you from editing while writing, so you'll reduce your thinking when they're new, without distracting editing. This is the actual 'undistributed' text. You edit later, so creativity is not stopped by the need to edit something.
Draft is a free and very useful free writing tool. You can use it anywhere because it's browser based. You have nothing to download and it supports Word, Google Docs.
IA writer (Mac, iPad and iPhone: Premium)
iA Writer, writing app for iOS, Mac, iPad and iPhone and available from the Apple Store. The Mac version costs $ 9.99 and the iPad and iPhone 5 versions cost $ 4.99. Pro version but more expensive and involves parsing not related to this review.
Like other text editors evaluated here, iA Writer uses Markdown to format text. You can use a combination of keyboard shortcuts, or then use the regular asterisk to format text. IPad and iPhone versions have on-screen keyboards to use. With the Mac version, you can see the preview window, displaying the formatted text.
iA Writer also offers focus mode, so you'll focus on writing each sentence, thus reducing the temptation for you to edit as you type. Due to space limitations, this feature is not available on iPhone versions.
If you use iOS on a mobile device, then iA Writer is a great text editor. Whether or not it competes with OmmWriter depends on individual preferences, but iA Writer does not provide a higher level of formatting and does not provide a pleasant OmmWriter writing environment.
WriteMonkey (Windows, Free)
WriteMonkey is a writing application with a minimal interface. However, it will improve if you need them, often useful even if you want a simple text editor for most tasks.
As you learn the functions and commands, you will write entire documents formatted with just the keyboard. It is compatible with bookmarks like Markdown, Markdown Extra and Textile. You can customize the color, font, text size, page layout and add any element to the information bar you want. Auto-save and spell checking are available and you can use the ‘Its All Text’ addon to integrate with Firefox.
If you are writing long texts, you use a feature called Segment Focus that highlights the selected text so that you focus on the text without being distracted by the text around it. WriteMonkey is good if you want the abridged text editor with Markdown to improve the text. It will also carry: just copy the unique WM file to the portable storage device and you're ready to use.
Byword (Mac, iPad and iPhone: Premium)
Byword is another application, similar to iA Writer in that it provides versions for Mac, iPad and iPhone. It appears very similar to iA Writer, enhances text through Markdown (including keyboard shortcuts), you are allowed to preview the document and then export it in a variety of formats to your favorite web platform.
You sync documents across all Apple devices you have, including iCloud, and you can use Dropbox to access and edit all your documents anytime, anywhere with any device. This is a good text editor if you need the basics and want to use it to view and edit documents on any Apple device you own.
Byword for Mac is different from the iOS version and is available for OS X Mountain Lion v.10.8 and above. The iOS version is available for every device running iOS 7 as a popular app. Is it better than iA Writer? Probably not, but that is the decision you choose. It costs $ 9.99 from the Apple Mac store and $ 2.99 with a mobile device.
WriteRoom (Mac / iOS)
WriteRoom from HogBay Software is the most expensive text editor software we've discussed so far. You can get it from the Apple Mac store for $ 29.99 or the iOS mobile system from the Apple store or iTunes for $ 4.99.
At first glance, it is a fairly basic full screen text editor but it provides a toolbar, the scroll bar is not displayed when you are writing a post. Basically, you have nothing to do but write if you like green text on a black screen.
It has a ‘typewriter scroll’ system that keeps the text active in the middle of the active window. You don't have a stream of activity running down the screen as you type, but it's still in the middle!
WriteRoom comes with free cloud backup and sync. Customizable font and background color.

There is very little choice between free text editors and each is worth a try - after all they are free!
