TOKYO (Reuters) – Sony Group Corp said it plans to ramp up production of its PlayStation 5 console as the supply chain shrinks and signaled a sweeping expansion of its games portfolio to include more titles for PC and mobile devices.

The PS5, which went on sale in November 2020, sold less than its predecessor in its second year due to component shortages that have hit the electronics industry. But it’s expected to close the gap in year three and overtake PS4’s installed base the following year.

Beyond the initial increase, “we are planning further large increases in console production, taking us to levels of production that we have never reached before,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said at an investor briefing.

While China’s COVID-19 lockdowns continue to create supply chain uncertainty, “things are definitely looking up,” he added.

Sony forecast PS5 sales of 18 million units in the business year through the end of March compared to 11.5 million a year earlier.

Describing a shift by PlayStation to stop focusing on single-player games exclusive to its platform, Ryan said more PC and mobile titles will be offered in addition to live service games, which provide continuously updated gameplay.

While PS4 and PS5 titles are expected to account for more than two-thirds of launches this year, PC and mobile titles will account for nearly half of new games in 2025.

“Initiatives to broaden our audience…will have a fundamental effect on the shape of our games portfolio,” Ryan said.

With the change, PlayStation aims to keep pace with industry change that has seen cloud technology and the increased computing power of smartphones free users from bulky hardware and more money spent by gamers on free online titles

Amid much speculation that the metaverse, or the idea that users will spend more time in simulated environments, will change the industry’s business models, Ryan said that many consumers will continue to play as before.

“There will be many, many individual gamers who prefer to enjoy games the way they have played them for the last 30 years or more,” he said.
