Rebel Wilson transforms into Britney Spears for a “crazy” dance scene in “Senior Year” – Jugo Mobile

A lot of Secondary year— the new Netflix comedy starring Rebel Wilson that started airing today — is all about nostalgia. That makes sense, given that the movie’s premise finds Wilson as a former high school cheerleader who pulls off a bad jump in 2002, slips into a 20-year coma, and wakes up in 2022. But oddly enough, a lot of this nostalgia is about the year 1999, rather than 2002. (Almost as if the screenplay, by writers Andrew Knauer, Arthur Pielli and Brandon Scott Jones, was written in 2019, not 2022). And nothing is more 1999 than Britney Spears.

In case you need a reminder that she was and is an icon, 1999 was the year Spears released her debut album. …Baby again, which quickly became the gold standard of pop albums. So it’s only fitting that Wilson’s character, Stephanie, turns to Britney when needed.

Here’s how it goes: Stephanie has returned to her old high school, determined to complete her senior year as cheerleader captain and prom queen, despite being 40 years old. But, much to his dismay, the cheerleaders are no longer the popular kids. More than that, they no longer do sexy dances to 40s pop music as their routines. When Steph finds out that no one from the cheer squad has been invited to the cool influencer party, she decides her teammates need to relax and have fun dancing to the 1999 hit single, “(You Drive Me) Crazy”. And because it’s a movie, it quickly turns into Wilson in a shimmering green top in a faithful recreation of the music video.

Although not as prolific as the album’s singular titular, “Crazy” still reached the top 10 and came with an unforgettable music video, top-notch choreography and, of course, an outfit. signature. You can never recreate perfection, but Wilson and her cheerleaders do their best. Audiences already know Wilson can sing and dance, of course – Fat Amy didn’t reverse the rhythm in Perfect for nothing, but Britney’s dance moves are on a new level.

In a In the wings video posted by Netflix, which you can watch above with the full “Crazy” dance scene, Wilson said he rehearsed the number for five days. And, she says, she took it very seriously. “I just tried to channel [Spears’] energy,” Wilson said. “In a few takes, our director Alex Hardcastle said, ‘I thought for a second it was Britney.’ »

Equally impressive are the teenage actors, some of whom, it turns out, are pretty amazing dancers. The number was rehearsed for five days, Wilson says, and the entire cast of young actors immediately jumped in and got it. “I was really impressed,” she said.

That’s not the only booty shake the cheer squad does in senior year. After finally winning prom queen, Wilson performs an emotional duet with his prom king to Celine Dion’s “The Power of Love,” and at graduation, the cheerleaders treat their classmates to spinning on “Hot in Here” by Nelly. But none live up to the “Crazy” scene. After all, Britney will always be the queen.
