Bạn Đang Xem: Mark’s Top 100 Games: A Roundup
Every two years (or so) I blog my top 50 or 100 games on my personal blog, akapastorguy. This time around, I decided to share that list with our always wonderful Opinionated Gamers readers…along with some random thoughts I had about the list.
method to madness
This is how I come up with the final list:
- Download my BoardGameGeek collection. (There are 4227 games I’ve played/owned/rated, so that’s a pretty substantial list.)
- Clean the spreadsheet to remove expansions and any games rated below 6. (As of today, that’s 1722 games.)
- Review and clean up games that obviously won’t end up in my top 100. (Example: As much as I love Wits & Wagers or Win, Place & Show, none of them will be in my top 100 games…and that leaves me with around 500 games to work).
- Randomize the list of games and start comparing them in 1v1 playoffs. (The question I ask myself: which game would I choose to play, given the right number of players and the right amount of time?)
- The losers of the first round face each other… and the losers of the second round do the same.
- The losers of the third round are eliminated from contention.
- This process (which is long and a bit tedious) continues until I have roughly 100 games, each of which has won multiple 1v1 qualifiers to get here. Now when a group is dropped, I order them to get into the top 100.
- Once I’m in the top 25, I order them myself, leaving the 1v1 process behind.
tastes change
Out of curiosity, I compared my current 2022 list to my 2020 top 50 list, as well as my 2014 and 2012 top 100 lists. (No, I’m not sure what happened in 2016 and 2018. Evidently, I was playing lots of games instead of writing about them).
Over the last decade, I’ve had 192 games on my top 100/50 lists… but only 18 of them appear on each of the four lists:
- Africa
- Agricultural
- Year 1701: Das Brettspiel
- rising empires
- Catan
- Claustrophobia
- DungeonQuest
- Favor of the Pharaoh/Woo the King
- heroscape
- Im Reich der Wüstensöhne
- Memories 44
- Mystery Rummy: Al Capone and the Chicago Underworld
- Pandemic/Pandemic Legacy: Seasons 1 and 2
- race for the galaxy
- Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit
- Street football
- Thebes
- ticket to ride
- Zooloretto

Note: Three other games would be on that list were it not for an issue with my ranking system that caused five “should be top 100” games to drop from the final list. We’ll talk about that more in a minute.
And 22 games have appeared on three of the four lists… Obviously part of the change is due to new and exciting games that have appeared since 2012… but it’s also a matter of my changing tastes. (And the change in who I regularly play with: My kids are getting older, and the pandemic definitely changed the games that came to the table.)
Everyone in the family
Four game families appeared on the lists… in other words, although they are not the same game, they are definitely related.
- Daytona 500 gave way to Downforce
- Pandemic gave way to Pandemic Legacy
- The city gave way to Jump Drive
- Courting the King gave way to Favor of the Pharaoh
BGG and me
Only 8 of the games on my top 100 list are currently on the BGG top 100 list… and there’s even one on my list that isn’t ranked (Wolfgang Riedesser’s Route 66).
And 41 of the games on my list don’t appear in the BGG Top 1000 ranking.

mistakes were made
In the process of moving lists from one spreadsheet page to another, the following five games were lost and not considered for inclusion, which is maddening, since all five likely ended up in the top 100 list.
- 7 Wonders
- fast food franchise
- nemo’s war
- Sentinels of the Multiverse
- Terraforming of Mars
I haven’t chosen to rip other games to fit…instead, I think it’s smarter to own up to my mistake.
