Nintendo is slowly releasing N64 games in its Switch Online expansion pack and each month brings new additions. After Mario Golf’s pick up in April, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards hit the subscription service last Friday. Unfortunately, this re-release introduces a new bug that breaks the game on Switch.

Spotted shortly after launch, this new issue occurs in the underwater level of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. It’s not a great look for Nintendo Switch Online, as further testing confirmed this wasn’t present on the original N64 edition.

Shared on the Nintendo Switch subreddit by u/Keyblademasternadroj, they confirmed: “Getting hit by certain damage sources underwater causes you to go into stun forever, and you need to exit the level to fix it. I don’t remember this happening on the original hardware.”

Currently, Nintendo hasn’t officially commented on this bug, but in the past, they’ve usually quietly updated any issues with their emulation without making a statement. Unfortunately, if you’re looking to start playing Kirby 64 soon, there’s no real solution for this currently, unless you want to attempt this level without taking any damage. If you get hit, all you can do is exit the level and try again, so you might as well wait for a patch.

Not the first sign of emulation problems

We haven’t seen the smoothest launch for the Nintendo Switch Online expansion pack. Offering a new level to its subscription service, Nintendo added Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and N64 games to the hybrid console last October, but this isn’t the first time we’ve seen emulation issues for those N64 games.

At launch, N64 games were accused by many of suffering from input lag, frame rate issues, and missing features. For example, Mario Kart 64 had issues saving Ghost Data, Paper Mario would crash if you died with Watt as a partner, and it also fixed a fog issue in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s infamous Water Temple. However, it is worth noting that technical analysis did not think this was a big deal.

Still, Nintendo got a lot better at emulating N64 games in January, notably ironing out problems with Zelda and Paper Mario. We’re hoping it will also fix this new issue with Kirby 64 in a future update, but it’s unclear when that will be. Still, for a company with the resources that Nintendo has, I’d hope this wouldn’t keep happening.
