And of course that includes the ability to modify your Chromebook’s system files, so you can edit them to your liking (it’s similar to rooting an Android phone).

There are 2 things you need to keep in mind:

1/ Enabling (or Disabling) Developer Mode will erase your Chromebook: This is part of the Developer Mode activation process, which means your Chromebook will be “genuinely wiped clean.”

All user accounts and files on the device will be deleted from the Chromebook. Of course, your data is already stored online and you can use your Google account to sign in and sync back.

Important data is being stored on Chromebook, if not backed up online, please copy it somewhere first, USB or removable hard drive for example..

2/ Google does not provide support for Developer Mode: Of course, no one wants to let other people “play around, break, poke fun” into the operating system that they develop.

It’s like Windows doesn’t want users to crack the copyright

So in a nutshell, Google doesn’t officially support this feature. It is intended for developers (and advanced, technically savvy users).

Usually there will be a warning saying, “This may void your warranty – This may void your warranty”.

If you experience hardware failure when using developer mode then you can simply disable developer mode before taking it in for warranty. OK !

#4. Enable debugging

When you restart your Chromebook for the first time, you’ll see a setup wizard.

If you’re using an older version of Chrome, you probably don’t have this option – you’ll see a “Enable Debugging Features” link in the lower left corner of the first time setup wizard.

This will automatically enable useful developer mode features, such as the ability to boot from USB, and disable system verification so you can modify your Chromebook’s files.

It also enables SSH in the background so you can remotely access your Chromebook via the SSH server and allows you to set a custom password. If you have worked with VPS already then you will understand what I am talking about
