Step # 1: Access Google Keyword Planner
Keyword Planner is a free tool. But there is a catch. To use Google Keyword Planner, you need to have an account Google Ads . If you don’t have an AdWords account, you can set up one in minutes:
(Just follow the prompts, enter some information about you and your business and your participation. Note: You do not have to run an active campaign to use Keyword Planner. But at least you need to set up a Google Ads campaign).
Next, log into your Google Ads account. Click the wrench icon on the toolbar at the top of the page.
Then choose Keyword Planner keyword:
You will see two different tools in Google Keyword Planner: Discover New Keywords and Searched and Forecasted Keywords.
When it comes to keyword research focused on SEO, these two tools are enough to create Thousands potential keywords.
This tool is designed for PPC advertisers. So having a lot of features in the tool (like keyword bidding) won’t be useful if you’re using this tool to find keywords for SEO.
Along with that, EQVN shows you how to find SEO keywords by using each built-in tool Google Keyword Planner.
Step # 2: Choose your stuff
There are two main tools within Google Keyword Planner. EQVN will show you how to use these two tools to help you create a huge keyword list for your SEO campaigns.
1. Discover new keywords
Like its name, this tool is ideal for finding new keywords.
As you can see, the field above this tool says: Imported products or services are closely related to your business.
Quick note: The value you get from Google Keyword Planner mostly based on the information you enter here.
So, to help you make the most of this tool, EQVN will break down each of the main options.
Start with the Keyword group: Words and phrases that describe your business. This gives you access to Google’s internal keyword database for different industries.
Pro tip: You can enter multiple keywords into this field. Just put a comma after each keyword and press enter.
Start with a point website : This is designed for Ads users. But sometimes you can find a few sure keywords here using your site’s home page or an article from your site.
Once you’ve entered your information in one (or all three) fields, click Get results.
Next, you will see the Keyword Results page. EQVN will show you how to use that part of Keyword Planner later in the tutorial.
For now, dive into the second tool in Google Keyword Planner: search keyword volume and forecast.
2. Get search volume keywords and forecasts for your keywords
This feature is only really useful if you already have a long list of keywords and just want to check their search volume. In other words, this tool will not help you generate new keyword ideas.
To use it, copy and paste the list of keywords into the search field and click Start.
You will also see a similar Keyword Results page when you use the Find new keywords tool.
The only difference is that you only receive data for the keywords you have entered and Google predicts the number of clicks and impressions you will receive from the keywords you have entered:
No matter which tool you end up with, you end up in the same place: Keyword Results Page.
And now it’s time for EQVN to dive into how that page works and how to get the most out of it.
Step # 3: Filter and sort the results
Now it’s time to filter the keyword list down to a smaller list of terms that best suit you.
Both of the EQVN tools just described will take you to the Page Keyword Results Page, which looks like this:

At the top of the page, you’ll notice four targeting options: Location, Language, Search Network, and Date Range.
Here are four things to keep in mind:
The country you are marketing in.
Whether you want to advertise on Google or Google and its search partners online. EQVN recommends leaving this set as Google only.
For the time to summarize keyword results as the default 12 months is best
The next important feature of the Keyword Results Page is called Filters:
This feature gives you a large number of filtering options. This is where you can have the tool show you only keywords that contain a certain phrase word.
Why do you want to include certain keywords?
Let’s say you’ve just launched a new line of blue T-shirts. In that case, you want to make sure that the keyword Blue T-shirt appears in all the keywords that Keyword Planner suggests for you.
Do not include keywords in my account.
This does not include keywords for which you have bid in Ads.
This is useful for filtering out keywords that have a lot of search volume (after all, these terms tend to be really competitive). You may also want to filter out keywords that don’t have a lot of searches.
For example, suppose you have a large list of keyword ideas:
You can click on Average. Search monthly to sort results.
That way, you only see keywords that have a lot of search volume.
You can also do the opposite. Click on Average Search monthly again and you will get a list of low volume terms:
You can ask Google Keyword Planner to show you only keywords that compete with Low, Medium, or High.
Remember: Google Keyword Planner is 100% designed for Google Ads, not SEO.
Again, this setting only applies to Ads. So for effective SEO, we can skip this filter.
Top of page bid
This is the amount you expect to pay for your ad to appear at the top of the page for that keyword. (This used to be called Cost per click or CPC). Top of page bids are an authorized indicator of commercial purposes. So if you only want to target keywords that potential buyers are looking for. You can set this keyword to a certain amount. As you can see, there are two options: high range direct range and low range.
This is how often your site appears in the organic results for each keyword. (Note: to use this feature, you will need to connect your Google Search Console Account to Google Adwords).
The place where you rank (average) for each keyword in Google is organic. Again, you will need to connect to GSC to do this.
The last feature of the attention to keyword results page is called Broad Your Search.
This is a new feature that shows you keywords that are somewhat related to the terms you have entered.
Step # 4: Analyze the Keyword Ideas section
Now that you have filtered the results of keywords that are ideal for your business, break them up into groups.
Specifically, EQVN will show you how to analyze the terms shown in Wikipedia’s Keyword Ideas section on Keyword Planner.
Here is the meaning of each provision in this section:
Keywords (by relevance): This is a list of keywords that Google thinks best matches the keyword or URL you entered. However, keep in mind that this is a vision range and not a super accurate indicator of search volume.
Pro tip: Watch out for seasonal keywords. That’s because seasonal keywords (like the Halloween costume keyword in Halloween) can receive 50,000 searches in October and 100 searches in May. But Google Keyword Planner will say that the term receives 10,000 searches per month, which is a misunderstanding.
Compete: Like EQVN mentioned earlier, Direct competition on Google Keyword Planner has nothing to do with SEO. Instead, Online Competition is simply the number of advertisers bidding on that keyword. But the keyword is useful, we have to see if a keyword has any commercial purpose (after all, the more people bid on a keyword, the more potential they become. leads or customers).
Top page bids: This is another great way to increase the potential size of your keywords. The higher the bid here, the greater the traffic.
Step # 5: Choose a keyword
Now you know how to use all the tools, features and options in Google Keyword Planner. Here’s the final step: find great keywords that you can optimize for your site’s content. This is hard work. Why? There are many factors for choosing a keyword. And it is more an art than a science.

First, you want to think about keywords that are broad but also describe the idea of your product, service or content.
For example, suppose you run an ecommerce site that sells organic food.
If you want to write a blog post about the health benefits of organic coffee, you won’t want to use the keyword coffee (too broad) or the health benefits of organic coffee (too narrow).
But keywords like organic coffee, instant will be a great choice.
So turn that keyword into the field and click Start.
And take a look at the related keywords.
So: how do you know which keywords to choose?
Have dozens Various factors to consider. But, in general, EQVN will choose keywords based on three main criteria:
- Search volume: The average or high search volume, the amount of traffic that keywords can send you as much as possible.
- Commercial intention: In general, the higher the competition and the recommended bid, the easier it is to convert that traffic into paying customers when they visit your site.
- SEO competition: Like commercial purposes, Google’s keyword competition in organic search results helps you dig deeper. You need to see which websites are ranking on the first page and find out how difficult it is to overcome them.
Rewards Step 1: Get exact keyword search volume data
Google Keyword Planner will only show you the exact search volume data if you are running an active Ads campaign. On the other hand, you see one limit , like this:
Honestly, the range is really good. Keyword volume tends to fluctuate. So, even the exact average monthly search volume you’ve ever seen in Google keyword planner is nonetheless a rough estimate.
In other words, there is nothing wrong with choosing a keyword based on a search volume range.
That said, there’s a nifty trick you can use to get exact search volume from the Google keyword planner, without having to run ads in your Google Ads account.
Here’s how. First, find a keyword in the list of suggestions you want to target:
Then click Add to plan.
Next, in the right sidebar of the page, click Program Plan Overview:
And look at the number of user impressions you receive if you bid on that term:
That number is the number of people searching for that keyword every month.
(In this case, 2.1k searches per month)
And just like that, you now have accurate search volume data for your keywords.
Reward Step 2: Hack Google keyword planner
As you can see, Google Keyword Planner is pretty cool. That said, the Google keyword tool has two major flaws.
Hole 1: It only gives you keyword ideas that are very closely related to what you enter.
For example, let’s say your business sells organic food to pets.
So, you type organic dog food into the tool. This is what you get:
As you can see, these are variations of organic dog food, like:
- Natural food for dogs
- Brand dog food
- “dog’s food”
I don’t know about you, but I don’t need a fancy tool to come up with a keyword like dog food.
And that is the same story for most keywords. GKP is very good at making long tail versions of your keywords. But it’s not great at generating keyword ideas out of the box.
Hole 2: You get the same set of keywords that everyone else does.
Needless to say, Google Keyword Planner is an extremely popular keyword tool.
That means: the keywords you find in Google keyword planner tend to be super competitive.
Fortunately, there is a simple way to solve both of those frustrating problems: Hack Google keyword planner.
This is how it works: First, go to the Google Keyword planner new keyword discovery area. Then click Start with a web page.
But instead of entering keywords, you Enter the URL from another site in your segment.
For example, instead of entering organic dog food into school, use PetSmart’s dog food category page.
There are many other sites that you can use for Google keyword planner Hack, including:
