Adding other authors to WordPress requires no registrationGuest authors are great for helping create content at websites. It is a symbiotic relationship where everyone wins; They get the link back to their website when you get another article to attract interest from readers.

However, how do you add guest authors to WordPress without setting up an account or registration? If you want your guest to come back and keep writing, most of them will want recognition.

In this tutorial, I will show you two simple ways to use WordPress to add authors without an account or website profile.

But first, you need to make sure you agree to posts from guests at WordPress. There are several ways you can set this up, so it all depends on how you want external writers to create content for you.

Personally, I prefer to use the front end type. It's easy to set up, you accept the draft article without the writer creating an account at your website.

Method 1: Use the Plugin Guest Author

Today, we will use the Guest Author plugin. It is relatively new compared to other systems, but it is very simple system, does not take much time to include the author's name as well as the URL from that person.

This is the fastest WordPress guest author plugin you can conveniently use.

Install the Guest Author Plugin at WordPress. Because a lot of plugins will show up when searching for guest authors, make sure you install the plugin from Belal Sejouk.

Access Settings, click, “Guest Author”.

The only setting that you can change is to display the tool in posts, pages or both. These are all personal preferences related to how you want to operate the website.

For this tutorial, I will leave the default. This means that I can modify the author on the whole page with the same article.

Click the save changes button if you make any modifications.

Add new articles to the website.

Go to the Author section by scrolling down the article. It is likely the last thing at the post creation screen.

By default, WordPress adds authors to posts according to the logged in user. If the post is not from a guest author, you will keep this post as default.

Click the Guest tab if you add content from guest authors.

Enter the author's name.

Enter the author URL if available. This is likely a website, social media profile or anything else the guest author wants to be associated with.

Add a description from the author.

Click the box to add an author image.

This will open the WordPress media library. Just select or upload images as you normally would on a website.

When you publish the post, the guest author box will appear.

Author URL is attached to his or her name in the line below the article. The name in the author box is not a link.

Known issues

As this is a newer plugin, it is still under development. Unfortunately, it does not work well with different interfaces. For example, images do not appear when using the ColorMag interface. However, it works perfectly at the ColorNews interface.

So it is little hit and miss at this time for assistance. However, you can manually edit posts to bring data into the interface.

Use the post custom fields section to refine how the box appears.

For example, you must manually add custom fields for the author image for the interface. You also want to consider modifying the interface code to use the custom field listed.

Method 2: Use custom fields and manual coding

The second method of setting up WordPress to add authors to posts is by manual coding. You will need to use custom fields to do this.

Edit interface.php file. You can do this with FTP programs like FileZilla, using File Manager at cPanel or through the WordPress editor. For the purposes of this tutorial, I will use the cPanel option.

Paste this code into the function.php:

add_filter (‘the_author’, ‘guest_author_name’);

add_filter (‘get_the_author_display_name’, ‘guest_author_name’);

function guest_author_name ($ name) {

global $ post;

$ author = get_post_meta ($ post-> ID, ‘guest-blogger’, true);

if ($ author)

$ name = $ author;

return $ name;

When you save changes, the interface will allow new custom entries with guest author names.

Please note the “guest-author” code above. This is the custom field name you will use when adding author names. Just set this custom field value to its own name.
