In this post, I will look at 6 other keyword research tools. So wherever you are on your blog journey, you'll find a tool that's right for you.
Two methods of keyword research
The main goal of keyword research is to find keywords that you can rank in the SERPs; ie the top 10 search results for your term. Why?
Because if you are in the Top 10 search results for your target keyword, then you will have more chances to get relevant traffic to your site.
There are two keyword research methods used in the tools:
- Traditional keyword research tools allow you to enter the keyword ‘seeds’ and then they return a number of keywords. From there you assess the difficulty level to rank for each proposal.
- Competitor-based keyword research tools that use reverse engineering. They value the keywords your competitors have rated and rated if you can do better.
Assess keyword difficulty
Most keyword research tools now include a keyword difficulty rating. The idea behind this metric is to allow you to discover low competitive keywords that you can rank for.
When you examine the 6 keyword research tools below, you'll find that they return different points for our test keyword.
6 powerful keyword research tools

But it's important to remember that keyword difficulty is not the only factor and you should also consider other metrics.
Other features in KW Finder
There are three other features within KW Finder that deserve mention.

#3. Ahrefs – The world's leading tool for SEO
Ahrefs is an all-in-one (or All in One) SEO platform that supports both keyword research and competitor-based research. Its foundation is in backlink analysis, but now it provides a complete set of SEO tools.
You start by entering your focus keyword (or main keyword) and choose which platform to generate keyword ideas:
At the top of the results screen is an Overview table with common metrics such as Keyword difficulty and Search Volume, plus advanced metrics such as Return rate, Number of times Clicks and Clicks / Search:
Keyword difficulty estimates how difficult it is to rank on the first page of search results for your given keyword, using the number of Backlinks that the current top search results have.
In our example, the rating is 4 and suggest, you will need backlinks from ~ 21 sites to rank in the top 10 for this keyword. Ahrefs is built around the SEO value of backlinks, so it's no surprise that their KD metrics should include this.
And it suggests that: “We estimate that evaluate need backlinks from ~ 5 websites to rank in top 10 for this keyword”.
Meaning you need to backlink from 5 websites to enter the top 10.
Search volume shows how many searches your target keyword receives each month in a given country (average over the past 12 months). Ahrefs calculates this metric by processing large amounts of click data.
The return rate is a relative value that illustrates how often people search for this keyword again. It does not display the exact number of returns on the network and is useful only when comparing keywords.
Clicks is the total number of clicks (organic and organic) on the search results that people perform each month while searching for that keyword. Some searches lead to clicks on many results, while others may not lead to any clicks at all. As Tim Soulo said:
” For example, people search a lot for Donal Trump's games, but they don't click on any results because they see the answer right away.“
Clicks per search (or CPS) shows an average of how many search results people click after performing a search for this keyword.
Ahrefs estimates the potential for Traffic by viewing the organic search traffic of the current # 1 ranking results for that keyword.
Like we saw with other tools, keyword suggestions are divided into three groups:
- Have the same term – Shows you all keywords that contain all terms of the target keywords in them (in any order).
- Question – Shows you a list of keyword ideas that take place as a question.
- Also rank for – Shows you all the keywords that the Top10 ranking pages for your target keyword also rank for.
- Search suggestions – Shows you all suggested search queries via Autocomplete online when searching your target keyword.
You need to click the button View full report to see all keyword ideas. Here is an example about report ‘Same terms’ :
Along the top are various filters that you can use to narrow your choices. For example, only show keywords with a KD score of 0 to 40.
You may notice that some keyword ideas have a ‘Get metric’ button. This means that Ahrefs has cached data and you can access it right away.
With such a huge keyword database, you can wait for all results to load, so this option means you can access the data you want, when you want. It takes a few seconds to load the selected keyword data.
One thing we haven't seen is SERP data for keywords. If you press the button SERP of the keyword you want, you will see a drop down screen of the top 10 current results like this:
Research based on competitors
Ahrefs, like SEMrush, also offers you keyword research based on competitors through Tools. Site Explorer its .
Here you can enter competitors and find the keywords they are ranking for. Then you can find low competitive keywords by using filters.
Like we saw on Keyword Explorer, you can expand each line to see the full SERP analysis.
Other features of Ahrefs

- Content Explorer – Discover the most popular content for any topic
- Tracking rankings – Track your desktop and mobile rankings for any location
- Backlink checker – Analyze the backlink profile and explore link opportunities

Advantages of Ahrefs
- Limited free trial
